NanoRacks’ handling of launch coordination and logistics enabled us to build our satellites within a timeline usually unachievable in the aerospace industry.” – Planet Labs Co-Founder

Planet Labs Overview
San Francisco based startup Planet Labs designs and operates a network of earth observation satellites called “Doves.” Planet Labs’ “Flock 1” is the largest constellation of Earth-imaging satellites, made of 28 Doves. Planet Labs is committed to imaging the whole earth, every day, for humanitarian purposes. Planet Labs maintains a low-Earth orbit with a high enough resolution to provide top quality imagery without infringing on personal privacy. The company plans to put about 100 satellites within the year into space from the United States and Russia.

Business Need
Planet Labs is building satellites equipped with the latest commercial grade computers, while most traditional satellites utilize 10 year old computers, or older. The company has found ways to produce satellites at a much lower cost than most traditional satellites, leveraging billions of dollars spent on the consumer electronics for most satellite parts. Planet Labs is also able to keep their cost down with low launch costs through NanoRacks.

The Solution
Planet Labs was looking for rapid and repeatable access to space, not waiting around for a launch, as well as a program that could provide media and branding. In less than 10 months NanoRacks was able to help Planet Labs reach space. NanoRacks provided a turnkey launch and integration solution. NanoRacks provided “door to door” service with NanoRacks engineers traveling to Planet Labs offices to load the satellites for space launch. NanoRacks oversaw the delivery of satellites to the launch services and provided operations support to NASA and JAXA for the satellite deployment service.

Benefits from using NanoRacks
Planet Labs was able to focus on a tight development schedule while NanoRacks worked the launch preparations and integration. This allowed Planet Labs additional time to prepare the satellites and meet their schedule. In addition, the fantastic images taken by the astronauts was highlighted during a recent TED Talk by Founder and CEO, Will Marshall.
