Payload Safety Engineer

Mission of the Position:

The ISS Payload and Safety Engineer is responsible to coordinate with the Payload Developer for safety related issues and processes, and to make sure that the NASA ISS Payload safety processes are conducted to completion for flight and ISS Payload Safety Hazard Report Closure. The goal of this position is ensuring flight certification for ISS payloads and to make certain that ISS Payloads meet NASA safety requirements.

 

Essential Duties

Safety Compliance:

  • Review Payload Data and develop ISS Payload Safety Data Package.
  • Coordinate with the Payload Developer to acquire data necessary for safety compliance.
  • Develop ISS Payload Safety Hazard Reports and assure ISS Payload Safety Hazard Report closure.
  • Conduct reviews with the NASA Safety Review Panel.
  • Provide detailed reports and recommendations for mitigation strategies.
  • Prepare and present technical presentations.
  • Review documents, operational scenarios, and subsequent changes for safety impact.

 

Additional Responsibilities:

  •  Participate in reviews, forums, and technical interchange meetings for payload safety issues.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Competencies

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university required.
  • B.S. in engineering, systems engineering, or science preferred.

 

Experience:

  • Preferred 2 – 5 years experience working with mechanical, electrical, and structural systems, and reading and interpreting engineering drawings, including electrical schematics is required.
  • Experience in systems engineering or the ability to learn to apply systems engineering principles to payloads with multi-discipline configurations is preferred.
  • Broad based engineering experience in all major disciplines and involvement in payload development or designs is preferred.
